Lost Theories - Ben's Magic Box

Christina, over at Uncharted Island (home of an impressive character relationships chart), has an entry discussing various theories about Ben's magic box. Is it literal, metaphorical, or non-existent, she asks, and gives some nice reasoning for all three. I particularly like the possibility that it's all just another big lie Ben is spinning to manipulate Locke. It would certainly work, playing right into Locke's belief in the metaphysical properties of the island. On a similar note, Bruce brought up an interesting idea this morning. Suppose, for a moment, there is such a thing. Perhaps not literally a box, but some kind of object or device which grants wishes on the island. What would have happened if Ben, on finding he had this tumor on his spine, went to the box and wished for a spinal surgeon to come take care of it. Would one have literally fallen out of the sky?
