My daughter loves to watch TV. I don't really blame here; there's plenty of awesome stuff to watch out there, some of it even worth while. Whenever possible, I try to make our TV watching time at least somewhat educational.
Dirty Jobs and
Mythbusters have been great for this, as both are highly entertaining and engaging, and both offer numerous hooks for me to teach her a variety of things. I try to keep the totally mindless stuff, like
Viva Piñata, to a minimum. One of the reasons I don't have cable, truth be told, is so I can limit both of our TV watching without having to be the bad guy saying no all the time. We simply don't have all the channels she has elsewhere, so we don't actually tend to watch too much.
For several years, part of our evening winding down routine has included a fifteen minute segment where she gets to choose something relatively quiet to do. For the past several visits, she's invariably asked to watch some
Dirty Jobs, so we've curled up together in front of my media center pc and watched part of an episode before ending the evening with storytime. Other times she's wanted to do a puzzle or two at
JigZone, or play a card game with me, or best of all, have the fifteen minutes go to extra bedtime reading.

Tonight, as we were getting ready for her bath, she turned to me with a very serious look. "Tonight," she said slowly, "Can we watch some more of that thing on your computer. You know, the They Might Be Giants show?"
My heart swelled, let me tell you. Not only did she want to watch the
They Might Be Giants Fridays podcast, but she asked for the band by name. Naturally, I said"Of course we can! They're short, so we can watch a couple episodes." And we did, right after she read a book to me.
I'm so proud, my little girl has good taste in music.
