LegerdemainWhile wandering the dealer and exhibitor halls at , I came across an interesting booth.  What caught my eye initially was a screenshot with a very distinctive graphical style, something I've seen many times before.  It was a shot from a "Rogue-like" computer game.  I've loved that style of game ever since I first encountered Rogue on the Atari 1040ST back in the early '80s.  I've played most of them at one time or another; Hack, Nethack, Angband, the list goes on and on.

What is potentially the worst thing about is the travel.  I live in Oklahoma City, which puts Atlanta some sixteen hours away by car.  I've been on a lot of very long road trips in my day between cross country moves as part of my father's military careers and various vacations.  On the whole, I do prefer the road trip to flying, especially in this day and age of airport "security."

Menacing AlienCostuming is huge at .  Last year, I wandered around in awe of the gorgeous costumes all around me, snapping pictures left and right.  Stormtroopers, Browncoats, Klingons, and Colonial marines abounded, as did examples of nearly any science fiction, fantasy, or gaming character you could imagine.  I came home with a thousand ideas for costumes of my own, and vowed to come up with something good for this year. This year I went with orders from my daughter to get pictures of Iron Man, which I figured would be the costume for the con, what with the success of the movie and all.  As it turned out, I didn't see a single example of Iron Man armor; instead there were dozens of Jokers running amok.  It was actually somewhat disturbing the number of parents who dressed their kids as the Heath Ledger version.  But the hands down winner of my unofficial contest for coolest costume of Dragon*Con 2008 has to be this guy, dressed as the Giger alien from the Alien movies.  He was just flat amazing.

I'm finally home and starting to recover from 2008.  I had a blast while I was out there, and plan to detail it all over the course of several posts.  I wanted to start with the absolute best part of the whole convention, at least for me. When packing for the con, the some of most important items I tucked into my suitcase were all the print copies of podcast novels I've managed to collect.  I was looking forward most to seeing the authors and getting their autographs this time around.  The two key items, though, were a pair of special hardbacks.

My apologies for taking so long to get this one out. Life keeps happening to me, and I keep feeling the need to spend the evening listening to podcasts and playing on XBox Live Arcade. But I'm finally going to sit down and knock out the rest of my adventures. If you're just joining me, check out part 1 and part 2 first.

If you're just joining us, go check out Part 1 of my Dragon*Con odyssey. Following the extremely entertaining events of the Sigler-Hutchins party (which I hope either Chad or Lizzi will get some free time and energy to describe, as they tell it much better than I do), we headed back to the room. Lizzi and I both desperately needed to become unconscious (and did so rapidly) but Chad was fairly buzzing with energy and headed off for more adventures.

Me and the BoysThis year, I was finally able to make the trek out to Atlanta, Georgia, to attend . I've been wanting to go for years, but this is the first time I managed to save up both the money and the vacation time simultaneously. My friends Chad, Lizzi, Jess, and James were all going, and were happy to have me along for the ride. We reserved a room at the Marriot, rented a minivan, and on Wednesday, August 29th, we loaded up after work and hit the highways. The trip itself was long and relatively uneventful; the real fun began once we'd checked into our room Thursday and began roaming around.
