One of the unfortunate side effects of switching over to Drupal has been that I couldn't find a way to bring the user database across properly.  Consequently, anyone who had an account on the site before can no longer log in.  I'd like to invite you all to come on in and register.  I know it's a bit of a pain to set up an account on yet another site, which is why I am leaving anonymous commenting open.  But I figure it's better to have to log in once and have the site remember you than to have to re-enter your name and email address every time you want to comment.  In addition, comments from registered users won't go into the moderation queue where they'll have to wait on me to approve them.

Once you have an account, you can tie it to an OpenID identity as well, which will simplify things even further.  You'll be able to log in with just the URL of your OpenID provider (for LiveJournal users, for example, your http://username.livejournal.com URL).  Sadly, the current OpenID support in Drupal does not currently handle autocreation of an account via OpenID login, so you would still have to register first.

At any rate, please come on in, register, and say hello.

DrupalDrupal

At work, I've been spending the majority of my time working on a complete redesign of the website using .  I've been really impressed with the power and versatility of Drupal, and have been really enjoying setting it up, even when the going gets frustrating.  I ran into some trouble working with a wordpress import filter, so I sat down to try it with my own site, just to see if I could get it working.  Before I knew it, I had undertaken the project to convert The Last Exit to Babylon over.

It's been slow going, but with Chad's help, I think I've finally gotten the majortiy of the existing functionality transferred.  Not everything's 100% yet, and there are probably still a lot of formatting issues from the import, but it works now, and I decided it's ready to go live.  So here it is!

I've got some ideas for new features I want to add, and new ways of handling older features, but that's off in the future.  For now, goodbye and hello, as always.

2008 Okie Blog AwardsOne problem with my laptop having been defunct for a while (it's currently in for repair/replacement at HP) is that I tend to not spend much time online when I'm not at the office.  Because of that, I totally missed out on hearing about nominations opening for the .  So imagine my surprise this morning when the fine folks over at posted to say that the final nominees had been selected and voting was now open.  I was really excited to see under the list for Best Overall Blog an entry for my own humble little . I'm pretty amazed to be held up there next to the other guys in that category.  Especially since it's not in a "" way! The full list really does have the best of the best of Oklahoma blogs, many of which I already read, and some I'm definitely going to have to add to my reader.  It was also great to see my friends at the , and the get nominations in their categories.  I've got some tough choices to make as I prepare to make my vote, and I hope some of you Oklahoma bloggers out there will throw some voting love my way.

I've finally gone and upgraded the site to the latest version of Wordpress.  For the moment, it looks like most of it still works like it is supposed to, but I am still in the process of upgrading various plugins and moving things around.  Let me know if anything appears broken for you, or if any of the changes don't seem to work right.

Due to an increase in the amount of spam I've been having coming through the server, particularly since I opened up user registration, I've decided I needed to take some extra measures to verify that those wishing to register or comment are, in fact, human.  Or, at least, aren't spambots.  To this end, I've installed a plugin that implements the reCAPTCHA anti-bot system for comment and registration forms. What this means for you is that if you are leaving an anonymous comment (that is, if you are commenting without logging in), you will see a box below the comment form similar to this one: <

Fail Whale! If you're seeing this post, instead of a generic failure page for the site, then my DNS has successfully propogated, and you are seeing The Last Exit to Babylon on our new server. The recent outage was the kick in the pants I needed to finally get things moving.  It's been a great run with my old friend jher hosting things for me down in Austin, and I've enjoyed better service than some ISPs I've used (or worked for).  But he'd like to get out of the free w

My apologies if things got a little weird here at the Last Exit to Babylon tonight.  I've been wanting to make some changes to the layout, and first needed to redo how the left and right sidebars were handled behind the scenes.  That led to some interesting issues while I swapped in and out multiple themes, added plugins, and generally ripped code out and replaced it.  Things are stable now, and should work better when I try changing the theme again in the future. Thanks for your patience.

So as you might have noticed, I launched the new version of The Last Exit to Babylon. We're now running under . I'm far from finished, however. Many of the old posts still need to be edited, as the importer didn't handle the "autotags" that used to generate internal links. I've been going through those manually and getting them taken care of. The FAQs also didn't come across, so I will be going through and reposting them as well.

Things have been pretty slow here at The Last Exit to Babylon, I know. There's a good reason for this, though. I have managed, despite getting caught up in watching too many movies and reading too many comic and books, I have made some real progress on redesigning the site itself. I've been wanting to convert my site over to use Wordpress ever since I did the same thing for Middle Raged Punk.

I am pleased to announce I have found my new niche on the internet. I am the number 1 google result (at least at this very moment) for "worst rock star ever." I think that really says something about my ability to play Guitar Hero 2. Unfortunately, the label really doesn't fit any longer, as I am slowly but surely progressing my way through medium difficulty, getting five star reviews for every song I can.
