Xbox 360

Everyone knows that troubleshooting computer problems is little more than black magic and voodoo.  This has never been more apparent to me than when I am trying to figure out what's gone wrong with a sealed "black box" system such as my Xbox 360.  I know what all the pieces do right up until they connect to the console itself, then they disappear inside and I've got no clue what's happening.  And I can't look, of course, as that would void my warranty.

Such was tonight's issue.  About a week ago, my Xbox 360 suddenly stopped being able to see the memory unit I use to store my profile.  I went ahead and recovered my gamertag to the hard drive while I waited to be able to test my memory unit in someone else's console.  It turned out the memory unit was fine, but I hadn't had much time to troubleshoot since then.  Today I discovered that my Xbox 360 also could no longer sync up to either of my controllers.  That meant something was pretty seriously wrong, and I was probably going to have to call Microsoft support.

Fortunately, I called Dustin first.  As I described my issues, he dredged up from both memory and an online forum a similar problem he'd had a while back.  He'd called Microsoft, and been walked through a weird set of tasks that shouldn't have had any effect, but evidently took care of the problem:

  • Power on the console
  • Hold down the little sync button (normally pushed to sync a new controller to the console) for 30 seconds.
  • Power down and disconnect everything, including removing the hard drive
  • Wait for a full minute
  • Hook everything back up, and power up as normal

I followed those instructions, admittedly skeptical of the outcome.  But sure enough, when I finished, I was able to immediately sync a controller.  And when I plugged in my memory card, it recognized it immediately.  I have no idea why it worked, but it did.

Dustin's JUJU is strong.

Last night, just as I was finishing the latest round of updates for this site (an overhaul of the movie review system) I got a tweet from one of my Xbox Live friends asking if I was up for some action.  Ordinarily, I'd have been all over it, but I was too wiped, so I begged off.  Tonight, though, as soon as I got my daughter tucked into bed, I got online and let him know I was ready to fight the apocalypse.

Fortunately, I had some time to wait while he got online, and did a quick check to see when the long-awaited downloadable content might be coming.  As it turns out, : April 21!  With Survival Mode and Versus support for an additional two campaigns, I imagine I'll be back to playing every night by the end of that week.  I can't wait!

When I play online multiplayer games, I typically only play them with people I know.  Sure, I've gotten into the random GTA IV free-for-all with fifteen total strangers, but I go into that under the assumption that I'm going to get totally pwned in player verse player combat.  But when I sit down to play something more cooperative, I usually only do so with people on my Xbox Live friends list.  I know several of those guys personally, and the rest I've met through them.  If a friend of mine is playing with a few of his buddies and invites me in, I wait until the end of the game to extend any friend invites to the other guys.  I want to see how they play before I set myself up to play with them in the future.

I was wandering through the Internet the other day.  I forget what I was looking for, if indeed I had any sort of goal at all.  Sometimes, I just go where the tubes take me.  At any rate, I came across a site that amused me greatly, and decided I absolutely had to give my Xbox 360 a blog of his own.

I originally bought my Xbox 360 to play a single game: .  I mean, I knew I would buy and play other games, but the real catalyst for finally buying a game console was the opportunity to spend countless hours killing zombies.  Dead Rising had only one major drawback: it's a single player game.  Now has cured that with their latest offering:

Left 4 Dead

Grand Theft Auto IVLast night, I fired up the Xbox 360 to pursue some ranked multiplayer crime with Dustin.  We managed to get into one deathmatch, in which, as usual, our team came in last.  It was a lot of fun, but we truly are a pretty sucktastic team.  Dustin is much better than I am, both from more experience playing the game and just generally having better hand-eye coordination and gamer reflexes than I do, but we still rarely (if ever) come in higher than last or second to last.

Let Sleeping Rockstars LieLast night, and I decided to try out the online multiplayer aspects of .  At first, it didn't look like itwas going to happen when we ran into an issue we've had before where neither of us could invite the other to join a game or enter a private chat.  After messing around a bit, we finally got things working, and had a great time running through a few of the multiplayer missions.

LEGO Indiana JonesEarlier this week, my daughter and I popped into the store long enough to pick up . We were huge fans of the LEGO Star Wars games from the time we first got the Xbox, so it was a foregone conclusion we'd pick this one up. As soon as I saw the first trailer and Indy as an unlockable character in the last LEGO Star Wars, I knew I had to have it. It wasn't until last night, however, that we got a chance to sit down and play it.

Oblivion LogoHello, my name is corwin, and I have an addiction. With little in the way of tabletop role-playing games in my future, I decided to turn to the next best thing: game-console based RPGs. I had heard a lot of really good things about the games, particularly the latest, . Not too long ago I heard that Bethesda Softworks had decided to end production of the numerous add-ons to the game so they could concentrate on their next product. That sounded like a good time to jump on board, with all of the add-ons complete, and a finite amount of downloadable content to buy. I also timed things right so I could by the "game of the year" edition, which included the two biggest add-on packages, and .

Xbox 360Of all the outfits from whom I've had to receive customer support, I never thought would be the ones to give me an easy and pleasant experience. I've been having some trouble with my own lately, including the dreaded and a horrific grinding noise from the optical drive. Last night I finally managed to make the time to call Microsoft and see what we could do about it. I bought the machine just under a year ago (the day after last Christmas, in fact) so I was hoping I could have some repairs done under warranty. There are quite a few games I'm interested in this holiday season, but I don't want to buy one if the game console is going to turn itself into a doorstop.
